Webcomic Review – Dinosaur Comics – 2 Stars

In some situations, absurdity can be a great feature in a comic strip – just look at BizarroBlog. But when it comes to Dinosaur Comics, it’s hard to feel that Ryan North hasn’t pushed it a little too far. I do like the idea of creativity-through-limitations, but even that’s got its limits. I tried very hard to like Dinosaur Comics, and I have huge respect for the readership levels that Ryan’s achieved. But unfortunately, it’s never lasted more than a few days in my RSS feed. If you like non-linear character-based comics, I’d suggest something like Nedroid Picture Gallery.

Webcomic Review – Questionable Content – 4 Stars

There are not many webcomics that upon being introduced to, I’ll go back and read the entire archive – especially when said archive covers over 1,000 strips and almost six years! But Jeph has created characters and a story here that made me want to. The writing is great, you’ll fall in love with the characters, the artwork is extraordinary (and certainly does justice to the beautiful ladies of Coffee of Doom!), and the indie music references just complete the ensemble. It’ll take a bit of background reading to get your head around who’s (doing) who – but I certainly recommend it.

Webcomic Review – xkcd – 5 Stars

As far as webcomics go, there is simply none better than xkcd. I can’t remember exactly when I started reading, but I think it was somewhere around March ’06, long before I knew what an RSS feed was. It’s a lot more simple now that I don’t have to check the site daily. But by now Randall’s put together almost 550 strips, and that’s a debt of laughter that I could never thank him enough for. His strips range from droll, to beautiful, to just plain funny. Then, of course, there’s my favourite, a delicate reference to Bond and Mathematics.
