Zine Review – Flurb (Issue 2) – 3 Stars

While not quite up to the standard of issue one, either in terms of quantity or quality of submissions, issue two of FLURB still makes great reading. I particularly liked Charlie Anders’ take on the mechanics of sexual orientation, and how you’d feel if it could be switched like a lightbulb; and John Shirley’s tale of a boy who could see “space demons”, a group of mythical figures luring the unsuspecting to their deaths with visions of false futures. FLURB’s been a great way for me to find out about some amazing authors, that I wouldn’t have heard about otherwise.

Zine Review – Flurb (Issue 1) – 4 Stars

If you’re a sucker for good sci-fi like I am, then you’ll love FLURB. It’s the best place to find great sci-fi authors doing what they do best: writing, not to sell books, but purely to express through the art of storytelling. Issue One is a great place to start, with Cory Doctorow’s enticing exploration of consciousness and it’s detachment from the physical confines in “I, Row-Boat” and Mark Laidlaw’s study of the terrifying origins of computers in “Evaluation of the Hannemouth Bequest”. Rudy Rucker calls issue one the ‘Cyberpunk’ issue of FLURB, so if that sounds appealing – get reading.
