Admit it. You’re jealous of the people who post FaceBook status updates from their phones. You’ve seen the phone icon and thought, “I wish I had a fancy phone that could do that.” Now you don’t need one. With Chime, you simply create a link between your mobile number and your FaceBook (or Twitter) profile, and you can update your status via SMS. It’s not free, but it’s a standard mobile number, so if you’ve got a capped plan and don’t tend to go over your limit, then the message costs will be part of your cap. Cheap and effective.

When I run, I wear custom-made orthotics to handle some pretty serious pronation, so it can be tough to find the right shoe. The assistant at Rebel was sure that if I’d be wearing the orthotics, I’d need the shoes with the strongest rolling support, avoiding natural, cushioning shoes. This surprised me, so I checked with a podiatrist. His answer was the exact opposite – the orthotic provides the support, so just cushioning shoes are best. I don’t expect the staff to have all the answers, but if they’re not sure, they should say so – this is where injuries come from.

I like automation. The skill of swiping barcodes over a scanner feels accessible to most people, and the ability to avoid lines and check-out quickly is a main goal of shopping. Unfortunately, the Coles automated system still needs a bit of work. Not all items scan easily – in my shopping trip, I was advised three times to “contact a staff member for assistance”. And while it does get easier with practice, it can be tricky to find some of the fresh produce items in the menus. I’m looking forward to the system streamlining, but there’s some way to go yet.

Like anything, there are pros and cons with this service. On the cons side, it’s a bit more expensive and slower than most other ISPs. For example, my plan (16GB/month at 1024/256kbps) sets me back about $75 per month. The pros are that it’s completely portable, so it suits my life-style and I’m not locked in to a landline that I don’t need. Also, the support’s been surprisingly good. I’ve never been on hold longer than a minute and most issues are resolved immediately, with the small minority taking no more than a few hours to be sorted.
