Product Review – Nice & Natural Natural Nut Bars Chocolate – 4 Stars

I know they’re not really good for me, but I think if I’m going to snack on something sweet and tasty at work, it’s probably better that I have one of these, rather than chocolate or a packet of chips. It’s good to be able to read an ingredients list that you can understand. And in this case, it’s: peanuts, chocolate, sultanas, honey, rice crisps, and sesame seeds. That’s it – nothing unpronounceable. They are a more substantial snack than a standard muesli bar, in terms of both calorie content and ability to fill you up, but they certainly taste good.

Product Review – Beefmaster 4 Burner Premium BBQ (Part 2 – Usage) – 4 Stars

Let alone taste, I’ve never cooked as steak that LOOKED as good as the one I cooked last night. The hotplate fired up and seared both sides to a delicate golden brown, then a couple of minutes on each side on the grill gave it beautiful dark tan grill lines, while keeping it perfectly bleu inside. Also, the even heating on the hotplate, and some time with the hood closed served to crispify the skin and bake through a thick fillet of ling. The temperature spread feels very consistent and can be adjusted very quickly. I think I’ll enjoy this!

Product Review – Beefmaster 4 Burner Premium BBQ (Part 1 – Assembly) – 2 Stars

I fancy myself reasonable handy with a screwdriver. I’m not any kind of specialist, but I hang my own pictures and change my own tyres. That’s why I was somewhat surprised at how tricky the assembly of my new BBQ was. Issue one – it came with two different instruction manuals, only one of which was the correct one. Secondly, it wasn’t that the assembly was particularly difficult, but rather that it was time consuming and fiddly. I started at 4pm, and when it got to 7pm, that’s when I called it a day to finish tomorrow. BBQs – tougher than Ikea.

Product Review – Country Cup Croutons Creamy Roast Pumpkin & Garlic Flavoured Soup – 2.5 Stars

As you might know, after one particularly bad experience, I’m not a huge fan of cup-a-soups. The Country Cup Croutons range, however, seems like one of the best of a bad bunch. They’re not trying to be too much – although the idea that the soggy blocks could really be called ‘croutons’ is another matter. The taste is reasonable, though you wouldn’t want it for lunch every day. The other issue is getting all the soup powder to dissolve. Maybe I wasn’t doing it right, but I stirred this a lot and still found soup stock clumps while I was eating.

Product Review – Pilot Super Grip Pen – 4.5 Stars

For not much more than a couple of dollars per pen, it doesn’t get better than the Pilot Super Grip. In terms of ink on paper, it’s about as good as a ballpoint can get – deep black ink, 1mm ball for solid lines, and no imperfections for inking artefacts. It feels good in the hand, too. It’s light weight while still feeling solid, and the grip is comfortable without being too soft. In personal preferences, the weight distribution is good for pen spinning, and the clip breaks off easily without affecting the mechanism to give you something to chew on.

Product Review – Extra Professional Mints (Forest Berries) – 1 Star

Last time I reviewed mints I created a bit of a stir. I had no idea so many of you were mint connoisseurs, and willing to provide recommendations. Unfortunately, things aren’t looking up with the Forest Berry flavour of Extra Professional Mints. They’re designed to have berry flavour on one side and mint flavour on the other, but they end up simply tasting like acidic chemicals that have been scientifically designed to resemble minty berries. A true mint should clear the sinuses, rather than pander to the tastebuds. These are pseudo-mints at best, designed for people who don’t like mints.

Product Review – Jila Mints – 2.5 Stars

Here’s a clear example of me being directly influenced by TV advertising. I saw the Jila ads, and learnt about the new packaging (a tin, now) and that they’re Australian. And my choice was as simple as that. I’ve got mixed feelings about the tin. It looks cool, but you could never carry it around in your pocket because of the rattling noise. I’m also mixed about the flavour. On one hand, the spearmint is rounded and you don’t get too much fake sugar acidity that some sugar-free mint; but on the other, they’re not as strong as I’d like.
