Event Review – Pearl Jam (Etihad Stadium) – 4 Stars

Every so often we all need a lesson in the modern history of Rock and Roll, and even at 44 years of age, Eddie Vedder is a fantastic teacher. Sure some things have changed – he now swigs red wine, rather than beer, on stage; but the passion, the attitude, and the music remain the same. Touring their new album, ‘Backspacer’ (which I’m forced to admit I’m yet to buy), they mixed new with old (though, to the disappointment of many, avoiding ‘Daughter’), and even at one stage prompted a sing-along of Pink Floyd’sAnother Brick in The Wall’. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Event Review – St George Melbourne Marathon 2009 – 2.5 Stars

This was my first half marathon, and only my second competitive run, so I don’t have much to compare it to. I really enjoyed the run itself, and was great culmination to my training. It did seem, though, that corners had been cut with the race organisation. On the run, the distance markers were few, far between, and placed as to be very difficult to see; and distance-wise, the fact that the 5K and 10K courses were out by about 10% is realty inexcusable for an event of that size. It’s not cheap, so let’s hope it’s right next year.

Event Review – A Day In Pompeii (Melbourne Museum) – 4 Stars

Everyone’s heard the story of Mount Vesuvius erupting over Pompeii, but it takes an exhibition like this to truly understand what it meant. The exhibition is spread out nicely, with the first area dedicated to how the inhabitants of Pompeii used to live (with some amazingly preserved displays of household and garden items, and even carbonised food), while the second area described the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its aftermath. The exhibition becomes especially powerful with the plaster casts of the voids in the ash where bodies were trapped – freezing in time, forever, the last moments of these ancient lives.

Event Review – Sri Chinmoy Yarra Boulevard Half Marathon – 3 Stars

Earlier than I’d like on a Sunday morning in September, I took part in my first proper running race. The Sri Chinmoy group puts on a variety of casual sporting competitions all around the world, including about a dozen races in Victoria. It’s a nice group of people, and the setup is easy to work out, even on your first run. I was a little surprised to realise that the “aid stations every 2.5K”, was just the one station that the laps kept running past, but the effect was the same. Oh, and sub-48mins for the 10K, if you’re interested.
