Software Review – Radio? Sure! – 3.5 Stars

Anyone who listens to the radio over the internet knows that while it’s certainly possible, it’s not a particularly smooth and user-friendly experience. ‘Radio? Sure!’ (that name should give you an idea of the goals of this program) creates a nice little portable interface (no installation necessary, meaning that it can easily be used on a public or work computer) that catalogues over 12,000 radio stations that are available online, and makes it extremely easy to find, play, and even record them. There are customisation options, enabling you to add any new stations or change the look of the player.

Restaurant Review – The Vegie Bar (Fitzroy VIC) – 3.5 Stars

There’s a real art to cooking good vegetarian food; and it’s a skill that I wish I had. Luckily, Vegie Bar is just down the road from me, and if the (almost 24/7) lines to get a table are anything to go by, they’ve certainly got the skill down pat. And it’s cheap, too; with most of the mains hovering around the $10 mark (a distinct positive when my attitude towards vegetarian food is similar to my attitude towards organic food). For the record, my tempeh and roast pumpkin pizza was brilliant (and led me to establish what tempeh was)!

Product Review – GU Energy Gel (Chocolate Outrage Flavour) – 3.5 Stars

Put your hand up if you always wanted Nutella as a kid, but were never allowed to have it. Well, I’ve got a deal for you. If you exercise for over an hour, you’re allowed to tear the top of a sachet of Nutella-flavoured goo and have as much as you want. It won’t even spoil your dinner. If you ignore the hyperbolic flavour name, this is quite a good product. It has all the functional benefits of other GU Energy Gels with a flavour that you can actually enjoy, rather than stomaching for the benefit of the workout.

Product Review – New Balance MR1063WR – 3.5 Stars

As I mentioned yesterday, finding shoes to fit with custom orthotics can be a tricky task. Luckily, with advice from a podiatrist, I’ve found my way to the New Balance cushioning range. From this year’s selection, I’m using the 1063, and had no trouble placing the orthotics in under the insole whilst keeping a great fit overall. It’s a very stable shoe and certainly feels a lot softer under foot than some others I’ve worn. My only slight issue with these is that already, with only 100Km under them, I’m already noticing a slight loss of padding under the heel.

Video Review – Distraxion (2008) – 3.5 Stars

Over the space of two years (part of which was during his time at an animation school), Mike Stern put together a great animation called ‘Distraxion’. It’s great because the message is simply, it’s delivered in a charming way, the characters are relatable, and the animation is perfectly clean without being overly realistic. And I mustn’t be the only one who thinks it’s great; it’s picked up three awards for best animation at a variety of film festivals, and it’s been part of the official selection at seventeen others. It’s a great way to spend two minutes of your life

Product Review – Imation Nano USB Flash Drive – 3.5 Stars

What I look for in a USB memory stick is small size, durability, and ease of attachment to a keyring. The Imation Nano series performs pretty well on all three points. Sure, I’d like it to be a bit smaller; and sure, the swivel cover becomes loose after a while (it doesn’t fall off, it just stops doing much “covering”); but I’ve had one on my keyring for about four years without trouble. One thing that’s especially good is that the cover attaches directly to a keyring, and is part of the device, so it can’t detach and get lost.

TV Review – How I Met Your Mother (Season 2) – 3.5 Stars

I think it’s taken the writers of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ a year to work out where they wanted to fit. The second season has the same likable appeal as the first, but the humour is more refined, the timing is crisper, the dialogue is a bit snappier, and overall, it just feels like a tighter show. So even though I pushed through the DVDs in just over two days, the comedy has stuck with me. I hope they can continue with this trend into the third and fourth seasons. If so they’re going to have a killer show.

Restaurant Review – Crust Pizza (Fitzroy) – 3.5 Stars

I know that take-away pizza doesn’t really fit the standard “restaurant” category, but as far as pizza chains go, Crust is up there with the best. Sure it’s a little more pricy than something like Dominos, but you feel the quality both in the taste and in the way your stomach feels after you’ve eaten. I’m a big fan of the Upper Crust (gourmet selection) Sausage Duo pizza with its sweet caramelised onion setting off the Italian sausage and chorizo; as well as the Vegetarian Supreme for its creamy bocconcini and pesto aioli. Try it next time you’re ordering in.

Movie Review – Adventureland (2009) – 3.5 Stars

For all the highschool, college, and 30-somthings movies, it’s good to see a film about an age bracket that doesn’t get that much air-time. The performances here are fantastic, especially Jessie Eisenberg as James, the post-grad student unsure how to fit his literary life into the humdrum of a boring job. Greg Mottola’s writing and directing here is fantastic, and he’s managed to perfectly capture some of the uncertainty of relationships that fall somewhere between adolescent and adult. Also listen out for a great 80s classic rock soundtrack: there’s Whitesnake, The Cure, and Judas Priest, just to name a few.

Restaurant Review – Afghan Village (Camberwell VIC) – 3.5 Stars

Having not tried Afghani food before, I didn’t really know what to expect. What I didn’t expect was how delicate, yet substantial, the food at Afghan Village would be. There were leek pastries, and spiced lamb dumplings, as well as kebabs of marinaded chicken and lamb over salad. But the biggest surprise was the extremely tender lamb in the dopiza korma with wonderfully sweet onions and yellow peas that managed to be both juicy and crunchy. These were nicely finished with rosewater and cardamom custard. I didn’t know what to expect going in, but I certainly expect to go back.
