TV Review – How I Met Your Mother (Season 1) – 3 Stars

I’ll give this show one thing – it’s incredibly easy to watch. Within three days of borrowing the DVD, I’d finished the whole season. The characters are very likeable, the scripting works well (both in terms of the seasonal plot and the minute to minute dialogue), and the performances are all smooth. What it seems to lack, however, is the memorableness of some other shows. While I remember the characters and their various interactions, there aren’t many quotes there that I feel like referencing in conversation. But from my friends’ points of view, that may very well be a good thing!

Restaurant Review – Happy Kappa (Fitzroy VIC) – 3 Stars

First of all, this was my first experience with Japanese noodle soups, so take this review with a grain of salt (or wakame or menma if they’re more your thing). I was lucky to be eating at this small, quiet noodle place with a self-proclaimed ramen soup aficionado and fluent Japanese speaker; who, after discussions with the chef/waiter/one-man-band about his native area of Japan, soup specialities and bias against fried pork, quickly ordered for me kappa ramen with extra katsu. A new experience, but the healthy, filling, and cheap dinner was something I’ll be trying again.

Restaurant Review – Bushwa & Hooey (Melbourne VIC) – 3 Stars

It’s only been open a couple of weeks, but already it looks like Bushwa & Hooey is getting a bit of a following. And it’s understandable – with good quality coffee, and a nice (albeit concise) hot food menu and selection of fresh salads (though the Caesar could have done with about half as many croutons). Luckily, they’re planning on redoing the outside this weekend, and the old façade of Blitz Café currently gives the place an air of the milk-bar take-away, which does no favours to the soft and comfortable décor that you’ll see when you walk in the door.

Website Review – Oxt Weekend – 3 Stars

What exactly is “next weekend”? Is it the “next” weekend that we’ll get to, or is it the “next” one after that? If Ivan Cash and Jeremy Knight have their way, this conundrum could soon be a thing of the past. They’ve created the phrase “oxt weekend” to refer to “not this weekend but the weekend after.” It’s a lofty goal, aiming to add a word to the English language, but I admire their endeavour. I certainly know I’ve needed to clarify “next weekend” many times in the past. Plus, I’ve already used it to make plans for oxt Friday.

Bar Review – Sentido Funf (Collingwood VIC) – 3 Stars

In all the hustle and bustle of Gertrude St, Sentido Funf had the longest line outside of everywhere I passed on my way. And that made me feel of the loop. I’m in the target age group (or maybe just slightly over), and I live within a few kilometres, yet I’d never heard of it. Three deep at the bar, you couldn’t have ordered anything special, but once you made it outside, the tables were big and standing heaters made the winter night air bearable. But I must be old, as I thought it would have been better less busy.

Restaurant Review – De Los Santos (Fitzroy VIC) – 3 Stars

Something’s changed at De Los Santos, and it’s not for the better. Where previously all their tapas had been a delight; this time, two out of our five dishes were bland and lacked the intricacies of flavour and texture that had drawn me there in the past. It’s still a nice place for dinner, though; with a comfortable atmosphere, fully stocked bar, and soft Spanish guitar playing in the background. But now it seems that you need to play the tapas lottery between the soggy pumpkin fritas and the wonderfully delicate confit duck salad with sour cherries and candied walnuts.

Movie Review – Ratatouille (2007) – 3 Stars

Light-hearted and eminently likeable, ‘Ratatouille’ is a nice Pixar film for relaxing to, but it doesn’t quite live up to the standards they set themselves with films like ‘The Incredibles’, ‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘WALL·E’. The story is passable, with a good-natured message of accepting differences, and the characters have a classic cartoon warmth. But the pacing seems a little off, and you’re never really sure which revelation is the real climax to the film. That being said, Peter O’Toole’s ‘Ego’ the food critic is fantastic and serves as a lesson for anyone who chooses to share their opinions with others.

Restaurant Review – The Basin Café (Launceston TAS) – 3 Stars

With fog rolling down Cataract Gorge, allowing quickly snuck peeks at the scenery before it’s once again shrouded, the Basin Café offers a great place to sit and enjoy the view, or grab a quick lunch before you walk over the suspension bridge or ride the chairlift. The food is good value and tasty, exemplified by creamy seafood chowder and nicely stacked burgers (though they homemade beef patties would feel less processed if they were more coarsely ground). The service is quick and accurate, and if you stay long enough for the fog to lift, you’ll really enjoy this place.
