TV Review – MasterChef (Channel 10) – 2 Stars

I tried to get into MasterChef. I really thought that it could be one piece of reality TV that I’d enjoy. I enjoy good food so I thought that a show that requires participants to have some talent in this field would be good. But there’s not much in the way of memorable contestants, and the judges fail to garner much credibility – which is odd, given that I’ve been a big fan of Preston’s writing for years, and I’d really like to try Calombaris’s stuff at ‘The Press Club’. I think I’ll stick with watching ‘Hells Kitchen’ for the moment.

Movie Review – X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) – 2 Stars

There are some movies that explain very little about the details of the plot, and there are others, like ‘Wolverine’ that explain far too much. If you were to watch this movie and the first ‘X-Men’ film back to back, then the ratio of explanation/set-up to action might be just about right. I know that this is supposed to be an ‘Origins’ film, but there’s simply far too much time spent emoting over Logan’s back story. You can’t ignore the fact that it’s supposed to be an X-Men film, so I think this adaptation is let down in that respect.

Webcomic Review – Dinosaur Comics – 2 Stars

In some situations, absurdity can be a great feature in a comic strip – just look at BizarroBlog. But when it comes to Dinosaur Comics, it’s hard to feel that Ryan North hasn’t pushed it a little too far. I do like the idea of creativity-through-limitations, but even that’s got its limits. I tried very hard to like Dinosaur Comics, and I have huge respect for the readership levels that Ryan’s achieved. But unfortunately, it’s never lasted more than a few days in my RSS feed. If you like non-linear character-based comics, I’d suggest something like Nedroid Picture Gallery.

Movie Review – No Country For Old Men – 2 Stars

Here’s another example of a film that was hyped so much that I was quite let down by the actual thing. I’ve loved most of the Coen brothers’ stuff, so was more than a little disappointed by this. The story was acceptable, but Brolin seems to just be passing the time in his role. And while Bardem seems to be sufficiently un-emotive for the sociopath hitman, he just never scared me enough. I don’t know if it’s because the Coen brothers are adapting someone else’s work; but I just didn’t “feel” this film the same way as with their others.

Movie Review – I Am Legend (2007) – 2 Stars

It’s amazing how such a small change to the ending of this movie could change the theme of this film so extensively. This is the third time that Richard Matheson’s book has been made into a film, and it takes the greatest deviation from the story. An ending, similar to that in the book, was made for the film initially, but in a supreme act of pandering to test audiences that only want happy endings, it was rewritten and filmed. Luckily, the original ending is a DVD extra feature, so make sure you watch that if you watch this movie.

Movie Review - The Sentinel (2006) - 2 Stars

Here’s a movies that simply doesn’t live up to its trailer. “He’s smarter and more experienced than all of you. He knows how you think, he knows how you operate, and he will use that against you.” – but he doesn’t. I wanted techno-secret-service-training-wizardry. I got Michael Douglas whinging about being framed, and using a fridge magnet to hold a door open. The only believable actor is Keifer Sutherland, and that’s because he’s playing Jack Bauer at 60%. It gets two stars for treatment potential. I’m tempted to read Petievich’s novel to see how it was intended.
