Restaurant Review – Feddish (Federation Square VIC) – 1.5 Stars

It’s all about managing expectations, really. The Feddish website is really impressive. It shows off a very classy restaurant with beautiful table settings and views. But just like online dating, reality doesn’t always live up to the picture. I don’t like expecting class and getting a laminated menu. It didn’t help that tables are set so far back you can’t see the view, that despite the multitude of toppings my pizza was bland, and that the wine list was short and over-priced. It’s a real shame to waste a great location on a place like this. I won’t be back.

TV Review – Lawrence Leung’s Choose Your Own Adventure (ABC1) – 1.5 Stars

This was the first time that I’ve watched, so this episode could have been the weakest of the batch; but unfortunately, you only get one chance. This episode had Lawrence learning to fight so he could get revenge on a school-yard bully who pushed him into a hedge 20 years ago. He plays himself as the lovable chump anti-hero, but by the end I was in complete agreement with the bully. From the clearly staged, awkward altercation with a random “Miyagi” found in the phone book, to the kung-fu master asked to open a jar – it’s just not classy TV.

Music Review – The Prodigy ‘Invaders Must Die’ – 1.5 Stars

It’s a real shame to see the bastion of 90s hard dance fade like this. Listening to a Prodigy album these days is like playing kick-to-kick with your uncle who still thinks he’s in the South Melbourne reserve squad. The game’s moved on, but they’re still trying to keep up. You really the feel the 12 years since ‘The Fat of the Land’. They used to be right out in front, but now that mantle’s shifted to younger bands like Pendulum. ‘Run with the Wolves’ impresses somewhat, but that’s only because it’s built around a great Dave Grohl drum track.

Music Review – Black Kids ‘Partie Traumatic’ – 1.5 Stars

I’m all for bands finding a sound that works for them and sticking with it, but when every song on an entire album sounds exactly the same, you know they’ve taken it too far. That’s the problem with ‘Partie Traumatic’. I bought this album because I’d seen the potential in “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You”. But aside from that track and “Hurricane Jane”, this really could have been a singles disc of remixes. If you want something like this, but better, you could do a lot worse than ‘Perfect Distraction’ by Something With Numbers.

Movie Review - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) - 1.5 Stars

I know I’m supposed to take some deep youth-is-wasted-on-the-young message out of this movie, but all I’m seeing is a three hour biopic about a guy born with a bad skin condition who gets better as he ages. If I want to watch ‘The Elephant Man’ or ‘Forrest Gump’, I’ll watch the movies themselves, not this mash-up. Also, there was no need to tell the story in flash-back, and the Hurricane Katrina tie-in attempted to pull heart-strings that should have been left to be handled by the script. The 1.5 stars I’ve given are for the make-up and GC teams.

Hotel Review – Rydges (Port Macquarie NSW) – 1.5 Stars

If I’ve paid for a service and something goes wrong, the last thing I want is for the service provider to ignore the problem and insist that everything is fine. Even if they can’t do anything to fix it, you’d expect an apology for unmet expectations. Our stay at the Rydges had lots of little problems: pre-booked carpark unavailable, in-room toiletries were half used, etc. The issues weren’t particularly concerning, it was the indifference of the staff and their attitude in making you feel like it was your fault that things had gone wrong. The positive side – a good restaurant.
