Theatre Review – The Year of Magical Thinking (MTC) – 3.5 Stars

Joan Didion’s “year of magical thinking” refers to the delusions her mind created to deal with the death of her husband and only child within the space of a year and a half. Robyn Nevin plays Didion’s character, under the direction of Cate Blanchett (Nevin’s successor as Artistic Director or the Sydney Theatre Company) – an interesting professional relationship, I’d imagine. The subject matter is extremely powerful, leaving you with a real how-would-I-cope message. But the real star is Nevin’s acting – truly outstanding, and it never occurs to you that it wasn’t actually her that experienced these tragedies.
